Cars and Buses

Getting around Austin can be challenge. We hope this will make it just a little easier.

You can travel around Austin by bus, metro train, car or bike. Here you can find out how to get a driver’s license and car insurance, how to buy a used car, the best way to use the bus or train, what to do if you get in a car wreck and how toll roads work.

Here's a tip for you. Probably one of the first things you noticed about Austin was the traffic. It's terrible! If you can, always check Google Maps, Apple Maps or Waze before you get on I-35, MoPac (also called Loop 1) or Lamar Blvd. at any time of day. If there is a wreck or it's rush hour traffic — in the mornings when people are going to work and in the afternoons when people are going home from work — cars will be barely moving on those roads. These apps might show you a different way to go to avoid traffic. Good luck!
